OPPOSITE EFFECT instead of acting out due to his bad home life, he did the opposite and did his best to behave as much as possible to stay under the radar. consequentially, he doesn't have the bar fight, doesn't talk to pike afterward, and has to come into his own decision to join starfleet. he has a rough time with expectations put on him, but something clicks once he's actually in the academy and things go a LITTLE closer to canon from there, but he already has a platform of respect to work off of. vulcan is saved because there's no reason to delay saving it seeing as he's on the enterprise from the jump and people listen to him right off the bat. maybe earth blows up instead if more dramatique events are desired, maybe it's just a handy good-end setup.
TIMELINE SWAPS tos and aos jim swap but it's permanent send tweet. idk how that would even go. badly probably. mirrorverse stuff can be fun but i SUPER play fast and loose with mirror jim because he's a fucking cartoon villain so don't expect, like, exactly what's in the comics lol. feel free to be mean to him with a mirrorverse character though. i also love snw cast. let me bite you (lovingly).

TIMELINE FUCKERY this man's entire life is one big ball of timeline fuckery. maybe some shit happens and the enterprise shows up in mass effect. maybe the normandy shows up in star trek. this is the easiest option! i'm happy to rp run-ins, tense meetups, falling into battle together, saving each other's asses with their respective skill sets, whatever! this is also handy if it's possible to swap between the two cleanly somehow. see: enterprise crew taking shore leave at the citadel, etc. this is the "lazy" route but it's also easiest to jump into and has the most potential for hilarity with how different the universes are.
CAUSE AND EFFECT shit went bad and weird after the reaper war with everything separated from each other after the destruction of mass relays. the reaper war becomes the 'world war three' of star trek, and the alliance melts into something more like the federation. by the time jim's timeframe hits (2260s), starfleet is a thing. jim is a starfleet captain, the federation is slowly integrating back into the rest of space and terran humans back into citadel races with the enterprise and her warp core at the forefront. the events of the first movie still loosely happen, including the destruction of vulcan and the saving of earth. again. jim has many issues with longer-lived species comparing him to shepard.
FULL AU biotic alliance captain. the kelvin explosion involved eezo instead of radiation, explaining his blue eyes and later-shown biotics. hashtag brain camp. this can be used as a 'takes the place of shepard' option, though i'm far more inclined toward him being shepard's contemporary and just as insane (with as nuts of a crew) as she is. helps in the reaper war, etc etc.
FULL AU BUT THE OTHER WAY slap a mass effect character into star trek. do it. tell me all about it. mass effect races can easily be tossed into star trek just like trek races can be tossed into mass effect. just give me a rundown so i don't do anything that breaks your au vision.

VAMPIRE CANONS head of a vampire-hunting team. his father was a vampire hunter that briefly led a team when his own leader died and proceeded to sacrifice himself to save an entire town, aka the one jim was born in. jim has that hanging over his head his entire life, has his entire shitty teen/young adult years arc, and pulls himself together when his father's old mentor talks some sense into him.

OTHER i'm genuinely so easy when it comes to aus, if you have something you've wanted to play out and he's up on a meme, just lmk! auing him into canons where there's no option to ever send him into space is a little difficult for me, but i'm willing to give it a shot (see: vampire aus, zombie canons, etc).

ships as a whole still have to fit within the prefs on jim's permissions post wrt being shipped with men or non-men characters. exceptions to this are on a case-by-case basis, HOWEVER fshep is an open exception and is actually the preferred commander shepard option. (i'm not gonna say no to mshep though, obviously). again, if we already have previous cr you're golden.
